Does HMRC provide MTD software?
Last verified 23 October 2026
No. HMRC says it does not provide software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You need to choose a product from a private provider that works with Making Tax Digital, and HMRC does not recommend any product or provider.
To find options, use HMRC's software finder on gov.uk. You answer a few questions about your income sources, any other income you report on your tax return, whether you want new or connected digital records, and your accounting period. The finder then gives you a personal list. If your software is not shown, HMRC suggests asking your provider about its plans.
You can use one product for everything, or combine products, such as a spreadsheet with bridging software. If you combine them, the records must be digitally linked. HMRC's own online account is still where you sign up and check your details, but the records and updates come from your software.
VoxaMTD's free plan sends MTD quarterly updates for up to two tenancies; its year-end final declaration is coming before the first one is due (January 2028). You can import a CSV or Excel file, or connect your bank with open banking.
