What is Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet?
Last verified 31 October 2026
The Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026 is an official government document explaining how the Renters' Rights Act 2025 changes private renting. Landlords of existing tenancies in England had to give it to every tenant named on the agreement by 31 May 2026.
Why it matters to landlords
Most landlords and letting agents had to provide it. If an agent manages the property the agent must have given it, even if the landlord also did, and lodgers do not need it. It had to be the exact PDF from GOV.UK, either printed and posted or handed over, or attached to an email or text. GOV.UK says that emailing or texting a link to the PDF is not valid.
Tenancies agreed on or after 1 May 2026 work differently. Landlords must give written information about key tenancy terms before the agreement is signed, in the agreement or separately. A tenancy based only on a verbal agreement made before 1 May 2026 cannot use the sheet, so the written information about key terms was due by 31 May 2026. A different timeline applies where a valid section 8 or section 21 notice was given before 1 May 2026. If you missed it, the council can impose a civil penalty; giving it late does not undo that, but still give it and keep proof of how and when you delivered it.
Example
Pia lets two houses in Leicester under agreements signed in 2024. On 12 May 2026 she emailed the PDF itself as an attachment to each tenant, and kept the sent emails and read replies. Her new tenant who signed on 1 July 2026 got the written key terms before signing instead.
