What is Personal tax account?
Last verified 31 October 2026
A personal tax account is HMRC's online account for your own tax affairs. You sign in to use it, and you can create sign-in details during the process if you do not have them.
Why it matters to landlords
GOV.UK says you can check your Income Tax estimate and tax code, submit, view or manage a Self Assessment tax return, claim a tax refund, find your National Insurance number or Unique Taxpayer Reference if you already have one, and tell HMRC about a change of name or address. It also lists checking your Child Benefit and State Pension and updating Marriage Allowance.
For landlords, the useful part is finding your UTR and NINO, which you need for Self Assessment and MTD sign-up, and checking what HMRC holds about you. Signing in may involve proving your identity, usually with photo ID such as a passport or driving licence. The personal tax account is not where you send MTD quarterly updates: those go through compatible software, and you reach the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax service through your HMRC online account.
Example
Sunil cannot find the UTR on his old Self Assessment letter. He signs in to his personal tax account, finds the number there and uses it when he checks his details with his MTD software.
