What is HMRC app?
Last verified 31 October 2026
The HMRC app is HMRC's mobile app for managing your details, taxes and benefits. GOV.UK says it is available for iOS and Android.
Why it matters to landlords
You sign in with your HMRC online services details, or create them in the app, and afterwards you can use a six-digit PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition. For Self Assessment, GOV.UK says you can check your UTR and how much tax you owe, set reminders for payments, and tell HMRC you no longer need to send a return. You can also check your tax code and National Insurance number and track forms and letters you have sent.
The GOV.UK page on the app does not mention Making Tax Digital, so do not assume you can create records or send quarterly updates from it. Those need compatible software. The app is better seen as a convenient place to see what you owe, make payments and keep your contact details up to date.
Example
Leila sets a reminder in the HMRC app for her 31 January payment and checks her balance before it falls due. She sends her quarterly updates separately through her MTD software.
