What is Gas Safe Register?
Last verified 23 October 2026
The Gas Safe Register is the official list of businesses and engineers who are competent to work on gas appliances, fittings and flues. It operates under an agreement with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and covers Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Guernsey.
Why it matters to landlords
Anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be on the register. For landlords, this means the annual gas safety check, routine maintenance and any repairs must all be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A check by someone who is not registered does not meet the landlord's legal duty, however professional the paperwork looks.
Registration also depends on the type of work. Every registered engineer carries an ID card, and the back of the card shows which areas of gas work they are competent in. HSE advises checking that the engineer or business is listed on the Gas Safe Register website, or calling the register, before work starts. Keeping a note of that check alongside the gas safety record is a simple habit that helps if anything is questioned later.
Example
A landlord books an engineer for the yearly check on a combi boiler and a gas hob. Before the visit, the landlord searches for the engineer on the Gas Safe Register website, then checks on the day that the back of the ID card covers both boilers and cookers.
