What is Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?

Landlords in England must fit a smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, apart from gas cookers.

Why it matters to landlords

Alarms must be working on the first day of each new tenancy, and you must repair or replace them once told they are faulty.

Councils can serve a remedial notice and impose a civil penalty if you do not comply. Keep a dated record of each test.

Many landlords test alarms at check in with the tenant present and note it on the inventory.
