How do I sign up for MTD for Income Tax?

Last verified 23 October 2026

Use HMRC's online sign up service on gov.uk. Sign in with the user ID and password you use for Self Assessment, prove your identity if asked, tell HMRC about your self-employment and property income, then confirm the tax year you will start.

You must be registered for Self Assessment and have sent a tax return in the last two years. Have ready your property income start date if it began in the last two tax years, and details of each income source, including any that have stopped since your last return. If you need to prove your identity, you use an app on your phone with your passport or driving licence.

HMRC advises choosing your software before you sign up, then connecting it to HMRC afterwards. An agent can sign you up instead. From September 2026, HMRC also began signing up people who must use the service for 2026 to 2027 but had not done so. If that is you, check the details HMRC holds are up to date.
