Will MTD be delayed?
Last verified 23 October 2026
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started on 6 April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000. Gov.uk still gives the next start dates as 6 April 2027 for income over £30,000 and 6 April 2028 for income over £20,000.
The first quarterly updates were due by 7 August 2026, and from September 2026 HMRC began signing up people who should have joined but had not. HMRC's news release of 23 July 2026 repeats the April 2027 and April 2028 phases.
Some groups do have later dates. People who would need the SA109 residence pages join from April 2027. Some, such as ministers of religion and people who claim Married Couple's Allowance or Blind Person's Allowance, are exempt for now with a timeline to follow. Partnerships will need to use the service in future, and HMRC will set out that timeline later.
The best way to plan is to check your own start date against your Self Assessment return and get your software ready in good time.
