What is HMRC software finder?
Last verified 23 October 2026
HMRC's software finder is an online tool on GOV.UK for finding software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You can answer questions to get a personalised shortlist, view all available products and filter them, or check whether software you already use, including a spreadsheet setup, is compatible.
Why it matters to landlords
The questions cover your income sources (self-employment, UK property or foreign property), any other income you report on your tax return, whether you want to create new digital records or connect to existing ones, and your accounting period: standard tax year, calendar update periods or neither. Agents see the full list with filter options. HMRC says it does not recommend any product or provider.
HMRC's guidance on choosing software suggests checking that a product covers every income source, sends quarterly updates and submits your tax return, fits your accounting period, supports more than one agent if you need that, and includes HMRC Assist. It also says some free products suit simpler tax affairs but may limit use, for example by capping transactions. If the software you want does not appear, ask the provider about their plans. After choosing, you sign up and connect the software to HMRC.
