What is Digital records?

Digital records are the itemised record of each income and expense transaction that Making Tax Digital requires you to keep in software or a linked spreadsheet. Each entry needs a date, an amount and a category.

Why it matters to landlords

You do not have to scan every receipt, but the transaction itself must be recorded digitally, and the figures sent to HMRC must flow from those records through software rather than being retyped by hand.

Good digital records also make the year-end simpler, because your quarterly totals and final declaration are built from the same entries. Keep supporting documents in case HMRC asks to see them.
