Is landlord insurance tax deductible?

By the VoxaMTD team. Last verified 31 October 2026

Yes. GOV.UK says landlords' insurance policies for buildings, contents and public liability are deductible. The cost must be for the rental business.

If an insurance payout covers a repair, you can claim only the part of the repair cost that the payout did not cover.

Insurance is one of several running costs you can deduct. Others include letting agent fees, repairs and maintenance, utility bills, Council Tax and accountants' fees. Capital expenditure is not deductible.

If you use the property allowance instead of expenses you cannot also claim insurance. Keep the policy schedule with your records, and record each premium in the period you pay it so that your quarterly totals stay accurate. If you use a letting agent who arranges cover for you, check the statement shows the insurance cost as a separate line.
