How do I apply for an MTD exemption?
By the VoxaMTD team. Last verified 31 October 2026
Call or write to HMRC using the Self Assessment general enquiries contacts. You can apply yourself, through an agent, or as a friend or family member with authorisation. HMRC aims to reply within 28 calendar days.
Two types are available: a temporary exemption lasting until at least April 2027, and a digitally excluded exemption, which may be permanent depending on circumstances. Some people are automatically exempt, and then you do not apply.
You will need your National Insurance number, name, address and reasons. Digital exclusion applications also need details of how you currently file and any support needs. Apply now if you must start in April 2026 or April 2027; for April 2028, apply from summer 2027.
If you have already signed up, keep using the service and keep your records while you wait. An exempt person still reports income through Self Assessment. If refused, you can appeal in writing up to 30 days after the date on the letter.
