What is Right to Rent?

A Right to Rent check confirms that an adult tenant has the legal right to rent property in England. Landlords or their agents must carry it out before the tenancy starts, for every adult who will live there.

Why it matters to landlords

You check original documents or use the Home Office online service with a share code, and keep a dated copy. Where someone has a time limited right, you need a follow up check before it expires.

Letting to someone without the right to rent can lead to a civil penalty, and knowingly doing so can be a criminal offence. The checks apply in England only.
